Dear Gaynor,
When I was going through rehabilitation in July 1993 my mother, Ann Coe, suggested I start reading the Prince of Tides. I have always loved reading and was very eager to read the novel. Unfortunately, when I got to the end of a sentence I couldn't remember the beginning, but I pushed on. Now, thankfully, I can happily read without experiencing that problem. Funnily enough, I also enjoy Codeword. My speech therapist got me into doing it in 2014 and at the end of the week, I take it out of the Sunday Times eager for the new challenge. In the beginning, I asked my Mom for assistance all the time. Now, unless it is quite difficult, I am able to do one quite quickly on my own. I also have a codeword app on my iPad so, thankfully, am able to do one whenever I feel like it. So I hope my brain will also be strong when I am 80 : ).
All the best,
Janet Coe

It’s about 23 years since we last saw each other, David. I think you must bring Marianne and your children to see SA and me. Not necessarily in that order!!!
Yes, I battle with codes and I love the fact that you do too!!!!!
My heart smiles at the fact that you read my blogs, David - thank you.
With a smile I kiss your eyes

It always amazes how codes are thought of - does the person thinking them out start with the answer and work backwards? Their brains are obviously wired differently to mine as I battle with working them out! Sign Language it so interesting and our daughter taught herself it when a teenager, as she was losing her hearing - fortunately Tympanoplasty's sorted out the problem together with hearing aids. My Grandfather taught me the 'old fashioned' signing and I still remember almost all the letters 60+ years later! We do need to keep our brains working and learning new things, for as long as possible. Thank you for your memories and insight Gaynor.

Bless you Gaye! What a wonderful article you wrote about code breaking. So interesting and insightful. You're right - I'm sure crosswords and codeword puzzles all help keeping the brain active and supple. I go to a fitness class on Wednesdays and one exercise I abhor - it involves having to use my brain as I exercise. However, I know what the instructor is doing - he is literally combining physical exercise with mental exercise. The reason I don't like it is because I'm not good at that exercise and it makes me a little nervous...
It's so good you find code breaking stimulating - you will remain "young in the head" a lot longer.
Mind you, my children often accuse me of being "young in the head" ... though I think that's because I'm silly! Ha ha!
