That hope curled itself around my heart and I was lost. Her tail wagged again, very tentatively. It was her eyes that caught me though. Vulnerable and full of a kind of expectation: Please&#8230;please..!</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-7872" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-2-300x292.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="292" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-2-300x292.jpeg 300w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-2-150x146.jpeg 150w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-2.jpeg 395w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />She was an elderly black Labrador called Queenie.<br />&ldquo;Queenie! That&rsquo;s a beautiful name,&rdquo; I said crouched down in front of her, rubbing her ears. &ldquo;Do you feel like coming for a walk with me, Angel-Face?&rdquo; <br />At the word &lsquo;walk&rsquo;, she gave an exciting whine and her whole body seemed to curve into a gigantic series of mad wags. <br />&ldquo;You and Queenie will go well together. She&rsquo;s a lovely docile dog,&rdquo; said the lady handing me the lead.<br />That immediately put my hackles up. Queenie&rsquo;s too, I&rsquo;m sure.<br />Docile! Why did I require a &lsquo;docile&rsquo; dog? Yes, I had a limp but I could limp faster than some people could run. Well, maybe not that fast but I was definitely not a docile individual. I would lay down my life that Queenie was no docile dog! <br />&ldquo;C&rsquo;mon, Queenie, we&rsquo;ll show her,&rdquo; I whispered to my new non-docile friend.</p>
<p>My friend, B, had excitedly shown me this advertisement in the paper: &ldquo;Be a rainbow of colour and join <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pg/Oudtshoorn-Dogs-in-Need-1445656879040158/about/?ref=page_internal">Oudtshoorn Dogs in Need (Odin)</a> at Tantivvey in Blanco for their Odin Mutt Run and 5km Family Colour Run.<br />Participants are asked to wear a white t-shirt and bring a lead to enjoy a 5km run/walk with a shelter dog.&rdquo; <br />Odin is a pro-life organisation that focuses on outreach programmes for animals in need. Their&nbsp;kennels are at the Municipal Pound in Oudtshoorn and Blanco, George. They educate, medicate, rescue and re-home dogs.</p>
<p>I told <a href="https://www.earearblog.com/love-child/">Perdita</a>, my own little rescue dog, that I was leaving her at home.<br />&ldquo;I am taking another dog who still needs to be rescued, out for a walk today. You can&rsquo;t come with me. I will see you later.&rdquo;</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-7875" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-11-253x300.jpeg" alt="" width="253" height="300" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-11-253x300.jpeg 253w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-11-863x1024.jpeg 863w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-11-126x150.jpeg 126w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-11-768x911.jpeg 768w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-11.jpeg 1020w" sizes="(max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px" />B and I had told our friends about this walk so on that Saturday we all pitched up. I was given the gorgeous Queenie, B had a lovely young playful dog, Snowy, that leaped up at her in his joie de vivre. Everyone was given a dog, with their individual character traits. In the same way, every dog was given a person with their individual character traits! The dogs set off joyfully, almost seeming to drag the people at the end of the leash with them. Everywhere I looked, there were dogs streaming before and behind me. It was this wonderfully endless chain of dogs and people.<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span></p>
<p>I was singing very softly to myself: &lsquo; How much is that doggie in the window, the one with the waggly tail, how much is that doggie&#8230;&rsquo;<br />I was suddenly sprayed with this dust like purple paint. Glory be, I had totally forgotten about the paint. <br />&ldquo;Careful of my <a href="https://www.earearblog.com/but-but-please-explain/">Cochlear Implants</a>!&rdquo; I shouted. I suddenly remembered that I was wearing a coloured hat that was doing precisely that. It was protecting my Cochlear Implants. Queenie looked back at me reassuringly. Like me, she was sprayed purple. <br />&ldquo;It&rsquo;s okay,&rdquo; she seemed to say. &ldquo; It&rsquo;s actually quite a fun colour. Just enjoy!&rdquo;<br />The pink paint sprayer didn&rsquo;t surprise me when the dust cloud landed on my shirt. By then I was expecting it. The green and yellow followed suit. Queenie was quicker than me and dodged the paint. The purple dog merrily led the pink, purple, green and yellow woman on her way.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-7871" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-5-300x225.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-5-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-5-150x113.jpeg 150w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-5.jpeg 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />The laughing sprayed procession began it&rsquo;s walk around the dam. That was when I heard a loud shout behind me. I turned to see that my friend, Jan&rsquo;s Labrador cross Bulbul had decided that as well as being a great day for a walk, it was also terrific day to have a swim. He proceeded to pull Jan into the dam with him. Amidst much laughter, protests and imploring to Brutus to come out, a wet bedraggled friend swopped dogs with Tim. He was being led by a cheeky faced Jack Russell who went quite willingly to Jan. He gave her a few comforting licks and continued on his way leading a laughing Jan around the dam.<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7874" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/dog-8-300x264.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="264" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/dog-8-300x264.jpeg 300w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/dog-8-1024x902.jpeg 1024w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/dog-8-150x132.jpeg 150w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/dog-8-768x677.jpeg 768w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/dog-8.jpeg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />At the end of our five kilometre walk, we approached the kennels once more. I felt Queenie&rsquo;s steps begin to falter and slow. She did not want her walk to end. I did not want it to end. I imagined what it must be like for her. It must feel like going back to prison. Being caged up, sleeping on a concrete floor and worst of all, being deprived of love. My steps slowed but there was no getting away from it. Queenie and I arrived back at the kennels. I knelt down and looked into her beautiful deep eyes.<br />&ldquo;Thank you for taking me on a wonderful walk, Queenie. I wish that you could come home with me but&#8230;&rdquo;<br />&ldquo;Can I take her now?&rdquo;<br />This young boy looked at me eagerly.<br />&ldquo;You&rsquo;re taking her for a walk?&rdquo; He nodded. &ldquo;Terrific,&rdquo; I exulted. &ldquo; Her name is&#8230;&rdquo;<br />&ldquo;Queenie,&rdquo; he finished for me. &ldquo; And she&rsquo;s getting impatient.&rdquo;<br />I watched the two of them run off. Go, &lsquo;docile Queenie&rsquo;, run. Run like the wind!</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-7882" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-12-246x300.jpeg" alt="" width="246" height="300" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-12-246x300.jpeg 246w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-12-839x1024.jpeg 839w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-12-123x150.jpeg 123w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-12-768x937.jpeg 768w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Photo-12.jpeg 880w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 246px) 100vw, 246px" />How I wish that amazing institutions like Odin and the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/GRSPCA/">SPCA</a> didn&rsquo;t exist because every animal that needed a home had one. That they all had a special person that loved and cherished them. Suddenly I thought of Perdita, the little dog that shared my home with me. She had been by herself for hours. I must get back to her and take her for a walk. I laugh at her. Despite now being sixteen years old, she welcomes me with these big yelps and then charges from room to room with me chasing her.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-7873" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-1-264x300.jpeg" alt="" width="264" height="300" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-1-264x300.jpeg 264w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-1-902x1024.jpeg 902w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-1-132x150.jpeg 132w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-1-768x872.jpeg 768w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Dog-1.jpeg 1031w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px" />Dogs love you unconditionally. You have no idea of the love that streams out of them to you. If you are thinking of getting a dog, please don&rsquo;t go off to a pet shop or a breeder. There are so many dogs crying out for love at organisations like the SPCA and Odin. Perdita came to me from the SPCA as a two year old who had just had two puppies. I waited until her puppies were weaned and then joy entered my life!</p>
<p>I wish that those dogs on the walk that day, could be given the same chance to show their love. <br />I know that Queenie would!</p>
<p>Unconditionally!</p>

<p><span style="margin-left: 32px;">My</span> eyes open in the morning light and rest on the pillow next to me. There lies my companion and partner, <a href="https://www.earearblog.com/love-child" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Perdita</a>. She is a wire-haired dachshund who is now about ten years old. Like everything she will die. I abhor the fact that one day we will be separated. But I believe Perdita lives a blissful, happy and contented life and will continue to do so into her twilight years.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">This</span> is not the case for the eThekwini Metro Police dogs in <a href="http://www.durban.gov.za/Pages/default.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Durban</a>!<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">Butch</span> had spent the ten years of his life working for the police force. His handler gave Butch&#8217;s head a friendly roll between his ears. &#8220;Yer too old to continue working here, my boy, but I want to take you home to live with me. You&#8217;d like that wouldn&#8217;t you?&#8221; The German Shepherd&#8217;s tail wagged his agreement.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">They</span> had not bargained for the despicable auspices of the Metro Police Logistics Head, Innocent Chamane.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">He</span> stated that &#8220;old police dogs should be euthanized at the end of their useful working life. There is no point in getting emotional about it.&#8221;<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">In</span> other words, once a dog has passed it&#8217;s &#8216;sell by&#8217; date, it must be disposed of! Unlike the <a href="http://www.saps.gov.za" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">SAPS</a> units, the Metro unit refuses to allow handlers to take dogs home to live out their retirement after it has fought crime day and night for a decade.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">&#8220;Knowing</span> that the dog one has raised, trained, worked with, and which has probably saved one&rsquo;s life, will be thrown aside like a piece of rubbish when it is considered old &#8211; between eight and ten, has destroyed morale and has top crime fighters brought to their knees,&#8221; said South African politician, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dianne_Kohler_Barnard" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dianne Kohler Barnard</a>.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">The</span> &#8216;goings on&#8217; at the eThekwini Metro Dog Unit are appalling. Apart from Innocents horrifying directive it seems that the unit is plagued by shortages. Handlers are having to buy dogs food and shampoo from their own pockets.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">&#8220;The</span> issue of the shampoo may seem innocuous, but this is something that is vital in looking after our dogs and we have not had any supplied by the Metro Police in over a year,&#8221; reported a policeman. &#8220;The guys have got their own shampoo, but why should it come to this? We love our dogs and so we make sure it gets done, but it is highly unfair,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo; Some of the younger dogs are eating food that is meant for adult dogs because they refuse to order puppy food. They are meant to be fed the correct, nutritional dog food so that they may develop properly and see out their tenure as working dogs. The system is broken at the Metro Police.&rdquo;<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">A</span> large proportion of the dogs have not been inoculated because of outstanding vet bills.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">&#8220;The</span>&nbsp;vets now refuse to treat the dogs so they in turn cannot work. I don&rsquo;t know how it is possible for a metro the size of eThekwini to become classified as bad payers and let bills go unpaid like this for so long,&rdquo; another source added.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">These</span> comments were recently published in an article. As a result, a charity, <em><a href="http://www.feedingthefurballs.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Feeding the Furballs</a></em> attempted to make a donation of all that was necessary to keep eThekwini Metro Police canines fit and healthy. They arrived at the police dog kennels with more than R15 000 in food, shampoo, de-worming tablets and other dog treats. Instead of being greeted with thanks and hospitality, their reception was chilly. They and their much needed gifts were turned away.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">&#8220;We</span> were trying to find someone to donate the food to and then a guy came out and told us to leave the premises. He said that Innocent Charmane, the boss, was coming and they have been ordered not to accept anything from the public. The gentleman said that everything in the media was a lie.&rdquo;<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">A</span> lie, I ask with incredulity? Why would the dog handlers be untruthful about something like this? What have they got to gain???<br />
<a href="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Butch.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3739" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Butch-243x300.jpg" alt="Butch" width="243" height="300" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Butch-243x300.jpg 243w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Butch-122x150.jpg 122w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Butch.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px" /></a><span style="margin-left: 32px;">Instead</span> of living the remainder of his life in comfort as his handler had wanted, Butch was put into the concrete confines of the SPCA and shortly afterwards &nbsp;put to sleep. Actually &#8220;put to sleep&#8221; is too nice a phrase for what actually happened to Butch. He was murdered!<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">In</span> the light of all the furore, a spokeswoman for the eThekwini Metro Dog Unit is now claiming that Butch had <a href="http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2084&amp;aid=444" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">hip dysplasia</a>. The handler didn&#8217;t appear to be concerned. This condition is treatable! What if all humans with hip problems were simply put to death???<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">Why</span> are old dogs not treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve? When humans are ready to stop work and retire, it&#8217;s a time of celebration. Often a party at work is held, gifts are given and they are sent off with a warm pat on the back to enjoy their final years as they wish. They are certainly not imprisoned in a cell and then slaughtered once they have reached three score years and ten!<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">It</span> is appalling that man&#8217;s &#8216;best friend&#8217; is allowed to be treated in this barbaric fashion by Innocent Chamane!<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">As</span> a human, I am ashamed.</p>

<strong><em><span style="margin-left: 32px;">To</span> market, to market,</em></strong><br />
<strong> <em> <span style="margin-left: 32px;">To</span> buy a fat pig,</em></strong><br />
<strong> <em> <span style="margin-left: 32px;">Home</span> again, Home again,</em></strong><br />
<strong> <em> <span style="margin-left: 32px;">Jiggety</span> Jig!</em></strong><br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">I</span> go &#8220;<em>to market</em>&#8221; every Saturday and while never buying a fat pig I certainly come home each week with a <em>Jiggety Jig</em> in my step!<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">Deon</span> and Kobie Mocke are the architects behind this incredible enterprise. They have transformed a plantation of bare land into a wondrous confection of laughter, people interacting at tables under this vast green canopy of trees, delicious smells coming from the myriad of stalls offering different eats and beautifully intriguing craft stalls.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">They</span> decided to create a heart for <a title="All about George, South Africa" href="https://www.sa-venues.com/attractionsgr/george.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">George</a>. A place where people meet friends and family. In the old days every city had its central gathering place. One only has to think of Kerk Plein in Pretoria and the Groentemark Plein in Cape Town. In fact, every town had a gathering point where people sold their merchandise and mingled with friends and family. Here, in George, we now have The <a title="The Outeniqua Farmers Market 'home' page" href="http://www.outeniquafarmersmarket.co.za" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Outeniqua Farmers Market</a>.<br />
<a href="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/dogs.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2993" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/dogs-150x102.jpg" alt="dogs" width="150" height="102" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/dogs-150x102.jpg 150w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/dogs-300x205.jpg 300w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/dogs-1024x699.jpg 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a><span style="margin-left: 32px;">Most</span> Saturdays, mum and I join our friends, B and John and head to The Market. It is a place for everyone, young and old alike&#8230;.and their dogs! There are dogs everywhere. My Wire-Haired Dachshund, Perdita, is quite a shy dog and trots happily at my side. Brendan, mum&#8217;s black Dachshund, is a different case completely. He is convinced the world is getting up to madly exciting things without him and he is perpetually tugging at his leash in a &#8220;C&#8217;mon, we must get moving! There is exciting stuff happening out there!&#8221; Mum often hands the lead to B. Strength is needed to handle Brendan&#8217;s madly, eager exuberance! St Bernards, Jack Russells, Rottweilers, Labradors, Yorkies, Collies, Spaniels, Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers &#8211; every kind of dog either trundles next to their owners or else pulls their owner behind them in their eagerness to &#8220;see&#8221; The Market!<br />
<a href="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/cheesecake.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2985" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/cheesecake-300x274.jpg" alt="cheesecake" width="300" height="274" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/cheesecake-300x274.jpg 300w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/cheesecake-150x137.jpg 150w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/cheesecake.jpg 512w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><span style="margin-left: 32px;">Once</span> we arrive &nbsp;we browse around a bit before grabbing a table under the green trees and settle down to the most divine breakfast. Mum always has pancakes with cinnamon and sugar. John can never make up his mind and tends to have something different every week. B and I share quite the most divine cheesecake from <a title="Lauren's Deli Facebook Page" href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Laurens-Deli-Eatery/154772434558962" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lauren&#8217;s</a>. Quite honestly, Lauren makes the best cheesecake I have ever tasted. And I mean &#8211; ever!<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">Last</span> week, John did not browse with the rest of us. He bought himself coffee and a croissant and looked for a place to sit. He asked this man if he could please share his table. While they both ate, they chatted together.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">&#8220;Where</span> are you from?&#8221; asked the ever inquisitive John.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">&#8220;I</span> actually live on <a title="All about Robben Island" href="http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/916" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Robben Island</a>. When I was young my dad was a warder at the prison. And now I have stayed on the island.&#8221;<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">&#8220;Glory,&#8221;</span> said John, &#8220;was your dad there when <a title="All about 'Madiba' aka Nelson Mandela" href="https://www.nelsonmandela.org/content/page/names" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Madiba</a> was there?&#8221;<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">&#8220;Oh</span> yes, I remember Madiba well. He used to really play a &#8220;hot&#8221; game of table tennis with me!&#8221;<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">It</span> is wonderful the various people one meets in life, each with their own story.<br />
<a href="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/train.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2991" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/train-300x221.jpg" alt="train" width="300" height="221" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/train-300x221.jpg 300w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/train-150x110.jpg 150w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/train.jpg 506w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><span style="margin-left: 32px;">There</span> is a delightful little children&#8217;s train that travels on a certain route at The Market. I saw a friend of mine, Charlotte standing at the ticket seller&#8217;s with her four year old son, James. She was talking earnestly to him while he scuffed the ground in front of him, not looking at her. &#8220;Hi there, you two! Are you about to go on the train, James?&#8221; I called out. He mumbled something to his shoes, not looking at me.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">&#8220;James</span> is nervous that he will get on, not enjoy it and then be unable to get off again.&#8221;<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">&#8220;That&#8217;s</span> easy to sort out,&#8221; I said, &#8220;James, you just put both arms up in the air and wave at mummy and she will stop the train and get you off, I promise. Don&#8217;t be frightened. You will always be able to see mum.&#8221;<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">James</span> duly climbed onto the train albeit most reluctantly. And they were off. We watched as James&#8217;s expression turned from trepidation to enjoyment to sheer delight. He waved at Charlotte all the time but with one hand not two!<br />
<a href="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/music.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2987" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/music-300x217.jpg" alt="music" width="300" height="217" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/music-300x217.jpg 300w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/music-150x108.jpg 150w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/music-1024x742.jpg 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><span style="margin-left: 32px;">They</span>&nbsp;always have live music at The Market. This provides an opportunity for people to show off their skills. I remember listening to a folk singer on her guitar. She had a haunting quality to her voice that I have never forgotten. Eighteen years I spent not able to hear the music that I loved. I give so much thanks that now due to my <a title="All about the 'Wonder' of getting my hearing back after my first CI operation" href="https://www.earearblog.com/the-wonder" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">cochlear implants,</a> I am able to hear my music once more.<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">I</span> love to browse the second hand clothing stores. Recently I bought a fabulous velvet 70s flower power jacket. It looks incredibly trendy in a Gaynor-way and everyone comments on it. I also bought this terrific denim jacket. I had never owned one before and was proudly wearing it with my jeans. My sister caught sight of me and burst out laughing. &#8220;No, Gaynor, that is not the done thing! One should never wear a denim jacket together with jeans. It&#8217;s just not&#8230;well&#8230;kosher!&#8221;<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">Glory</span> be, how was I meant to know that?!?<br />
<a href="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/perdita-and-gaye.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2989" src="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/perdita-and-gaye-300x273.jpg" alt="perdita and gaye" width="300" height="273" srcset="https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/perdita-and-gaye-300x273.jpg 300w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/perdita-and-gaye-150x136.jpg 150w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/perdita-and-gaye-1024x934.jpg 1024w, https://www.earearblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/perdita-and-gaye.jpg 1852w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><span style="margin-left: 32px;">For</span> the last few weeks I have been selling my book &#8216;<a title="All about my book My Plunge to Fame" href="https://www.earearblog.com/my-book" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">My Plunge to Fame</a>&#8216; at The Market. I sit there with <a title="My blog about getting my 'child' Perdita!" href="https://www.earearblog.com/love-child" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Perdita </a>on my lap, behind a table covered in my books. People give a cry of delight as they come towards the table. Great, I think to myself, I&#8217;m about to sell a book! But their hands reach out, not for one of my books, but to give Perdita a stroke and a cuddle. She is sabotaging my book selling!<br />
<span style="margin-left: 32px;">I</span> have tried to convey some of the joy and pleasure of the <a title="The Outeniqua Farmers Market 'home' page" href="http://www.outeniquafarmersmarket.co.za" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Outeniqua Farmers Market</a>. But, alas, I am no <a title="All about SA literary giant Nadine Gordimer" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nadine_Gordimer" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Nadine Gordimer</a> and my expression does not do it justice. I return week after week and it is not just the cheesecake that is a draw card! Come yourself and experience the delights interwoven into that wonderful market place!</p>
