Gym is a different place to different people. A place of torture; a place of fun; a place of embarrassment; a place to ‘strut your stuff’!
I have found that it is a great place to keep this squonk body of mine moving. With brain damage it is more difficult to do things. I am unable to move my body as I used to. Because of my spastic right hand side, I don’t walk in the correct manner. I walk with a limp. But, hey, what a beautiful limpy walk I perform! Seriously though, I put unnecessary pressure on my body in all the wrong places. As a result I often suffer from tremendous backache. I have found that exercise is the best remedy for me. So, off to gym I go!
I don’t do the aerobics or Zumba dance classes. I would be a complete disaster causing untold chaos! I head for the machines. When I began gym I was unsure of which machines to use or for how long. Now I have it down to a fine art. Thirty repetitions on each machine! I laugh at myself returning recently from the Christmas holiday. Before the break, I happily skimmed through my thirty repetitions. Following it, I was ready to pack it in after only fifteen! It’s amazing how quickly you get out of shape.
The one machine I hate with a total passion is the bicycle. I found it so damn boring until my friend told me to stop cruising along with the control on one. I must push it up to at least two for four minutes and then three for the last minute. During that five minute bicycle ride, I now positively die! I definitely do not like the bicycle.
Dad used to come with me to gym. I can see him now in his “plimsolls” and grey tracksuit pants that were too short. I don’t think dad realised they were too short. They ended mid calf and his grey socks made up the shortfall. I smile remembering my father in gym. My gym is very relaxed and laid back. I barely work up a sweat. But dad was ten times worse! I would see him fiddling around on a few machines but he would spend the majority of his time watching all the nubile young women sweating through their aerobics class! Or sitting on a bicycle contentedly watching the cricket on the TV in front of him. Note I use the word ‘sitting’. Perish the thought of him actually riding the bike!
Smile. I miss dad.
I marvel at the ‘gorgeous’ people working out in the free weight area. Men AND women picking up the most astounding weights. This morning two young men were working together. Both had broad chests filled with M-U-S-C-L-E and arms like you wouldn’t believe! The one exhaled sharply, placed his hand around the dumbbell, shut his eyes, exhaled a little more and then with supreme effort he clasped it to his chest. His friend gave a running commentary of: “That’s it, come on now. Up…up…” Then the body builder pressed his dumbbell up above his head. He then returned the weight quickly to his chest once more and then let it fall onto the floor with a thump. This was accompanied by a great whoosh of air from himself and a “Good one, good one,” from his gym buddy.
Over the years I have come to know the various gym regulars. There is Hennie who has an amputated leg. I see him working on the rowing machines, complete with his prosthesis. There is Rina, a seventy year old lady who puts me to shame with the workouts she performs each day. There is the man with the wonderful bright sports shoes. I don’t know his name but one can’t forget his shoes or his smile! There is Trish, who always arrives at gym with her gorgeous hair pushed back behind a headband, looking neat and trim. She leaves a completely different person. Her hair is a disheveled wreck and her t-shirt is rumpled and wet with sweat. Her freckled face has perspiration dripping into her eyes and is plastered with a big smile. She has had a good workout!
One of the good things about having cochlear implants is that I am unable to weigh myself on the electronic scales in the ladies change room. Apparently electronics and my CI don’t go well together. I secretly smile watching the various women climb on and off the scales. Happy? Disappointed? Resigned? In actual fact, it is a liberating thing being able to walk past those scales without a thought!
You might have started this year determined to go to gym and get yourself in shape. By now your initial zest and zeal might have worn off. Perhaps you are tempted to pack it in. You mustn’t! I have learnt that gym is about far more than “keeping yourself in shape”. What strikes me about gym is that it doesn’t matter what size, shape and age you are. These actually don’t play a leading role in the general scheme of things. Yes, one strive’s to improve one’s body but that isn’t the be all and end all. Gym is a place for laughter and friendship. It is a place for competition and encouragement amongst friends. It is a place of smiles. I have been going to gym now for eight years. I…belong.
The best thing for me about gym is the feeling I have on leaving: okay, this body of mine has woken up. Now, let’s see what the day holds! Mmmmmm, maybe a banana milkshake!

Most of us remember that nursery rhyme:
To market, to market,
  To buy a fat pig,
  Home again, Home again,
  Jiggety Jig!
I go “to market” every Saturday and while never buying a fat pig I certainly come home each week with a Jiggety Jig in my step!
Deon and Kobie Mocke are the architects behind this incredible enterprise. They have transformed a plantation of bare land into a wondrous confection of laughter, people interacting at tables under this vast green canopy of trees, delicious smells coming from the myriad of stalls offering different eats and beautifully intriguing craft stalls.
They decided to create a heart for George. A place where people meet friends and family. In the old days every city had its central gathering place. One only has to think of Kerk Plein in Pretoria and the Groentemark Plein in Cape Town. In fact, every town had a gathering point where people sold their merchandise and mingled with friends and family. Here, in George, we now have The Outeniqua Farmers Market.
Most Saturdays, mum and I join our friends, B and John and head to The Market. It is a place for everyone, young and old alike….and their dogs! There are dogs everywhere. My Wire-Haired Dachshund, Perdita, is quite a shy dog and trots happily at my side. Brendan, mum’s black Dachshund, is a different case completely. He is convinced the world is getting up to madly exciting things without him and he is perpetually tugging at his leash in a “C’mon, we must get moving! There is exciting stuff happening out there!” Mum often hands the lead to B. Strength is needed to handle Brendan’s madly, eager exuberance! St Bernards, Jack Russells, Rottweilers, Labradors, Yorkies, Collies, Spaniels, Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers – every kind of dog either trundles next to their owners or else pulls their owner behind them in their eagerness to “see” The Market!
Once we arrive we browse around a bit before grabbing a table under the green trees and settle down to the most divine breakfast. Mum always has pancakes with cinnamon and sugar. John can never make up his mind and tends to have something different every week. B and I share quite the most divine cheesecake from Lauren’s. Quite honestly, Lauren makes the best cheesecake I have ever tasted. And I mean – ever!
Last week, John did not browse with the rest of us. He bought himself coffee and a croissant and looked for a place to sit. He asked this man if he could please share his table. While they both ate, they chatted together.
“Where are you from?” asked the ever inquisitive John.
“I actually live on Robben Island. When I was young my dad was a warder at the prison. And now I have stayed on the island.”
“Glory,” said John, “was your dad there when Madiba was there?”
“Oh yes, I remember Madiba well. He used to really play a “hot” game of table tennis with me!”
It is wonderful the various people one meets in life, each with their own story.
There is a delightful little children’s train that travels on a certain route at The Market. I saw a friend of mine, Charlotte standing at the ticket seller’s with her four year old son, James. She was talking earnestly to him while he scuffed the ground in front of him, not looking at her. “Hi there, you two! Are you about to go on the train, James?” I called out. He mumbled something to his shoes, not looking at me.
“James is nervous that he will get on, not enjoy it and then be unable to get off again.”
“That’s easy to sort out,” I said, “James, you just put both arms up in the air and wave at mummy and she will stop the train and get you off, I promise. Don’t be frightened. You will always be able to see mum.”
James duly climbed onto the train albeit most reluctantly. And they were off. We watched as James’s expression turned from trepidation to enjoyment to sheer delight. He waved at Charlotte all the time but with one hand not two!
They always have live music at The Market. This provides an opportunity for people to show off their skills. I remember listening to a folk singer on her guitar. She had a haunting quality to her voice that I have never forgotten. Eighteen years I spent not able to hear the music that I loved. I give so much thanks that now due to my cochlear implants, I am able to hear my music once more.
I love to browse the second hand clothing stores. Recently I bought a fabulous velvet 70s flower power jacket. It looks incredibly trendy in a Gaynor-way and everyone comments on it. I also bought this terrific denim jacket. I had never owned one before and was proudly wearing it with my jeans. My sister caught sight of me and burst out laughing. “No, Gaynor, that is not the done thing! One should never wear a denim jacket together with jeans. It’s just not…well…kosher!”
Glory be, how was I meant to know that?!?
For the last few weeks I have been selling my book ‘My Plunge to Fame‘ at The Market. I sit there with Perdita on my lap, behind a table covered in my books. People give a cry of delight as they come towards the table. Great, I think to myself, I’m about to sell a book! But their hands reach out, not for one of my books, but to give Perdita a stroke and a cuddle. She is sabotaging my book selling!
I have tried to convey some of the joy and pleasure of the Outeniqua Farmers Market. But, alas, I am no Nadine Gordimer and my expression does not do it justice. I return week after week and it is not just the cheesecake that is a draw card! Come yourself and experience the delights interwoven into that wonderful market place!

When Mum’s cat died we were dreadfully sad. He was eighteen years old and was much loved. Then the most amazing thing began to happen. The birds came back to her garden in their droves! Weavers, Finches, Sparrows, Sunbirds, Rock Pigeons and ordinary Pigeons. Even a baby albino Pigeon!
For Christmas, B and I gave Mum three large sacks of grain to feed her birds. When Mum let her dog out in the morning, she used to fill a cup with seed and scatter it on the bird table. The birds knew that the bird table was THE place to be. The little birds didn’t stand a chance when the ginormous Rock Pigeons were around. They settled their large, cumbersome bodies on the table taking up all the space and enthusiastically devoured the bird seed. All of it. Mum wasn’t having that! She bought a bird feeder which the Rock Pigeons are too big for. So while the smaller birds cluster around the bird feeder eating to their hearts content, the Rock Pigeons and pigeons devour all the seed that drops onto the ground.
Everyone is content. Even the little Albino pigeon!
I walked over to Mum’s house as I was being picked up there for gym. I made myself some coffee and took it upstairs to sit and chat. There was a sudden flurry of wings and sitting on the balustrade fence outside her room were four Drongos. Drongos are common in South Africa. They have glossy black feathers and red eyes. These birds usually get meals the honest way, such as capturing insects in mid-air using their incredible aerial skills. But at other times, like on cold mornings when few insects are flitting around, the Drongos turn to a life of crime.
When times are hard, this crafty bird can make false alarms to make other animals drop their kill and run from the scene. They then swoop in to pick up the remains! Researchers classify the Drongo as ‘a kleptoparasite’ – an animal that steals food from another creature that has caught it. But the Drongos sitting on the Mum’s balustrade, weren’t set on nabbing someone else’s food. No, these four mites looked expectantly at Mum. That morning, I discovered another way that they get food for themselves.
“Oh, they’ve come,” said Mum. She got out of bed and picked up a Tupperware box at the side of her bookshelf and carried it to the window. She opened it to a pile of cheese.
“Cheese,” I exclaimed, “birds don’t eat cheese, do they?”
“Drongos love it,” was the answer.
Mum would throw a bit of cheese into the air and the birds would collect it with a swooping dive. It was the most magical thing to watch. One of the Drongos had been tagged with a silver bracelet round it’s ankle. An “anklet”!
“I love this one. I call him ‘Oubaas‘.”
I smiled. That was Dad’s name on the farm.
“Watch,” Mum said. “C’mon, Oubaas, come get your cheese.” She held out the cheese cupped in her palm. He looked at Mum. He looked at the cheese. Then he swooped and landed on Mum’s wrist. Very delicately he bent and took a bit of cheese. Maintaining eyes contact with Mum he swallowed it, took another piece and then he was off into a nearby tree where he proceeded to put it on a branch and eat it in a more leisurely fashion.
I stood, totally entranced watching my Mum and her birds. Two mornings later, I went over to find Mum laughing. “You know how I always sleep with my window open. This morning I opened my eyes to see Oubaas inside my room, hopping along the end of my bed. Tik-tik-tik went his little feet and then he would let out his little rousing cry. He was waking me to come and feed him, the little blighter!” Mum said, fresh laughter assailing her.
I get so cross when people say that animals don’t think. They do. It is just that they think in a different way to man. They think in a way man cannot understand. Have you ever watched geese flying in a perfect V. They know who is going to lead, who the next two are going to be and so on. I think that animals often communicate telepathically. This flying in a V is a prime example!
I am sure that many have read The Elephant Whisperer. A couple of years ago when the author, Lawrence Anthony died, somehow his herd of elephants knew. They were hundreds of kilometres away yet they made their way to his homestead and just “hung out” there for a couple of days. Then they left. My heart tugs at that.
Whether it’s Mum’s Drongos, geese flying in a V, elephants mourning a lost friend…animals think. I think that they “think” in a finer way than man.
Lawrence Anthony wrote: “Our inability to think beyond our own species, or to be able to co-habit with other life forms in what is patently a massive collaborative quest for survival, is surely a malady that pervades the human soul.”

What were your childhood Christmases like?

I’m so lucky. For me, Christmas was the most magical, enchanting time.

We spent every Christmas with my Mum’s sister’s family – the Nel’s. There were four daughters in their family, Anne, Margaret, Karen and Judith, plus Liz, Megan and me in ours. Is it any wonder that my brother, Patrick was spoiled rotten! It was a case of finishing lunch and “Girls, would you clear the table!”

“What about Patch? He must also help.”

“No, leave him. This is girls work!”

Can you frigging well believe it? This was during the 70’s. At that time, feminism had not reared it’s wonderful and necessary head in the Young and Nel households. I find it so amusing that now in each us “children’s” families the kids clear the table, female AND male alike! The only children that are excused are my children, Perdita and Spencer. A dog and a bird are not all that au fait with clearing the table!

Those Christmases are filled with memories for me…..

The girls would take it in turns making the mince pies. We would turn the record player on and sing along. The house was filled with records of Christmas carols. Yeah, records not CD’s. Something that the younger generation have no knowledge of! Records of Bing Crosby crooning White Christmas, and Winter Wonderland, Oh Holy Night, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Please Daddy don’t get drunk this Christmas. Our favourite though, was definitely Boney M!

Mum, Libby and we girls loved to sing. And we did. Many an evening was spent with Anne, Margs and on guitars singing. It was so wonderful because we were taught to harmonise and let me tell you we made a pretty good singing group.

Joseph aka my sister Liz & heavily cushioned Mary, my cousin Kari

Every Christmas would involve the Christmas nativity play performed by us eight children. Patrick was naturally cast as Joseph which he endured for a few years but finally he had had enough of playing “the namby-pampby Joseph”! He had a far better idea. He would play a rough and tumble innkeeper instead and…he would set up a star that moved all the way across the lounge! And so complete with washing line and pulleys the star finally hopped and jumped haphazardly setting the path for Mary and Joseph. Elizabeth and Kari played Mary and Joseph. And what a Mary Kari was! She was about fourteen months pregnant and this Jesus was a large boy! She was stuffed cushions which slipped and slid, fell out and were re-pushed back in as she and ‘Joseph’ followed the star. They finally reached the stable where they were allowed to spend the night. Joseph set about delivering Mary’s baby. Libby’s maid, Josie, had had a baby in October. His name was Bonsela, which is Zulu for “present” and he made the perfect Jesus! Kari lay there saying things like: “Oh, Joseph, he’s coming now and he feels great!”

Joseph in turn declared: “You’re looking a little pale. I shall go and get you some water!” (Thoughtful husband, huh!) and Liz then scurried out and returned with Bonsela carried beneath a towel. Kari then threw away the third or was it the fourth cushion saying: “Oh, much better!”

At which Liz said: “And you’ve had a son and you shall call him Jesus!”

Bonsela’s black face grinned happily at us.

I am the king with the ‘black’ face & fetching orange towel crown!

Anne, Margs and I were always the three kings. Libby had wonderful clothes in which we adorned ourselves. Every year we would have the same argument over who was to wear the beautiful embroidered jacket! (I still lust over that jacket!) Margs said: “Let us follow yonder star. It will lead us to the baby, the Saviour of the world!” We three kings then set off across the lounge following Patrick’s star singing “We three kings of Orient are…” The star was meant to move to above Mary, Joseph and Jesus but instead it got half way there then stopped. And refused to budge another inch! We three kings were meant to finish our song and say: “Look, the star has stopped over the stable…” Let me tell you the star was nowhere near the stable. It was stuck just past the piano and refused to budge! Patch said: “Hold on, just let me adjust the…”

Me and the angel-fairy-shepherd!

At that moment, Megan who was meant to be an angel-shepherd and was dressed in a little ballet tutu, a straw hat and carrying a walking stick came flouncing past us in her own little four year world:”I’m a fairy shepherd, I’m a fairy shepherd!” she cried. “Look at me dancing…”

“The Angel is showing us the way,” cried Anne desperately.

We literally fled across the lounge till we reached a shed made up of draped towels. There, with Megs “fairy-shepherding” in and out, the rest of us sang “Away in a Manger” with gusto. A rainbow nativity scene in the 70’s! Joy to the World!!!

We had no fireplace so we used to arrange our Christmas stockings under the Christmas tree knowing that Father Christmas would find them there and we would wake in the morning to bulging Christmas stockings at the end of our beds! We also put out mince pies for Father Christmas to fortify himself with. Dad suggested a beer as well, to give him extra strength because he had a long way to go that night. Dad is always full of good ideas!

Eight highly excited children went upstairs to bed. I hugged myself when I lay in bed that night. I just loved Christmas. At 5.30 on Christmas morning we were all awake but we couldn’t get downstairs because the adults had locked the gate. So we sat on the stairs and sang Christmas carols and generally made a noise until at 6.30 the adults unlocked the gate. They opened the lounge doors and we gasped in awestruck delight. There were mounds of presents everywhere! Each person had their own little pile. Eight children, four adults and Gran. As I say, the lounge was teeming with brightly wrapped gifts!

And playing on the hi-fi was “God rest you merry gentlemen, let nothing you dismay, Remember Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas Day….”

I am so blessed to have such joy filled Christmas memories.Today I watch my nieces and nephew in their nativity plays and I smile at the enthrallment they carry with them. Family is the enchantment giver! Of that there can be no doubt.

So to all of you, may this festive season be filled with enchantment, family, laughter, friendship and most of all – Love!

And I thought: “Yes, that is what I will tell them about this week – My time performing Gaynor Rising at the Baxter Theatre. This was pre-Cochlear Implant, time.

Pandora, my cockatiel and I left for Cape Town. Some people travel with their spouses or partners. I travel with my bird! I was to be performing at The Baxter Theatre for two weeks. I was looking forward to it but was also poop scared. The last time I had performed at The Baxter was before my accident. When I was an actress. A damn good one! That was over. I now performed as Gaynor Young telling her “story”. Would people find it interesting? Would it hold their attention? Maralin Vanrenen, my director, had no doubts whatsoever. I must do what I always do…have faith in Maralin!

I stood at the top of The Baxter’s staircase and looked down into the foyer. I had performed here in quite a few productions before my accident. Oh,yes, I remembered this place. There was the bar where I had spent many an evening after my shows. There was the door leading backstage. There was one leading to the dressing rooms. I remembered this place so well.

My friend Jan!

I was to be performing in The Studio. It seats about 110 people. Perfect! I was downstairs reading about the various productions on at the theatre when I became aware that I was being watched. I turned to be met by the smiling face of an old friend, Janet Suzman. I hadn’t seen her for about 8 years. We had been e-mailing each other regularly but there is nothing better than being able to put your arms around the actual person and give them the warmest of hugs. Janet was directing Hamlet for The Baxter. I would be opening on the 28th at which stage Jan would be Hamlet-ing in Grahamstown. She got back and then had a couple of days free and then Hamlet opened in the main Baxter Theatre. She would do her utmost to see my show when she returned from Grahamstown.

M and I began rehearsing in The Studio. M is a person that knows me almost better than I know myself. On the day of our final dress rehearsal I went out for lunch with a friend. It was great seeing her again. I then went back to The Studio and I gave an absolutely crummy performance. While M was giving me notes afterwards, she flipped her lid when she heard that I had been out to lunch with a friend.

         “But, M, I didn’t have any wine, I promise!”

“It’s not the wine I am furious about. It’s you! Having lunch with someone you have to concentrate – particularly in a restaurant! You have brain damage, Gaynor!” She paused as if to let this sink in. And then in a softer tone, “You have your first performance tomorrow. I want all your concentration to be on that. Not on the friends you are lunching with. During these next two weeks your performance is what I want you to focus on. Totally!”

My preview went well. “And it’ll go even better tomorrow night!” said M.

I arrived at the theatre on Opening Night a bundle of nerves. Maralin and Karen, my Stage-Manager were already there. They had been adding bits to my set and it looked good. In my dressing room I found a letter from M.

“Shine as bright as you always do! Remember:

JUST TELL EACH STORY WITH IT’S OWN SPECIAL ENERGY AND COMMIT YOURSELF TO EVERY DETAIL OF IT’S SPECIFIC EMOTIONAL TRUTH.

You have made the journey. Now take us on that journey with you.

With you all the way, my friend.

       Love and bless you

       Maralin”

Mum and Dad came to my dressing room before my show to give me my three roses. It had long been a tradition for Mum to give me three Antique Silk roses on every opening night. On one opening night she didn’t do it because I let them know very late on the Saturday morning that I was on that afternoon – Camelot!

           She has never missed again!

That night my dressing room was filled with flowers from so many people wishing me well. Oh glory! I was a nervous wreck. I walked to a dark corner backstage and had a much needed chat to God. “Lord, I am freaking out here! I am truly going to need your help. You know that I can’t memorise words so each performance is different. I have to go “as the spirit moves me.”Please let your Spirit move me tonight! So…so over to you, Lord.”

The lights went down. I stood in the wings, acutely aware of my deafness, waiting for my flashing light from Karen which was my signal to move onstage. “Please, Lord, don’t let me make a fool of myself?” I prayed again. FLASH, FLASH, FLASH! Oh, shoot! Here I go…

The light came up on me standing with my back to the audience. Then as if hearing a call my head spun around. Facing the audience I gave a slow delighted smile and my first line came out:“Well, I never!”

I was away. My story had begun…..

I got a standing ovation that night. It was only when I saw M’s face afterwards that I finally relaxed. “Now…that was performing!” she said as she hugged me.

On the third night I gave a great show which was in turn reciprocated by a fabulous audience. I was just slipping into my trousers afterwards when there was a knock at my dressing room door. Without waiting for a reply the door opened and there was Janet. She didn’t say anything. Merely embraced me. For a long time. Her eyes were wet.

I love performing. Because I was unable to hear, M made sure that the lights showed up the first two rows for me. I had to be able to see when people were laughing, when they were clapping. I also saw the faces of people. I saw the man whose wife had obviously dragged him there, much against his will. His eyes were bored and a touch resentful.

I began performing. Gradually I saw the resentment disappear. I saw him begin to listen with interest. I saw him collapse with laughter at some of my funny moments. I saw the tears rolling down his cheeks as I concluded with i thank you God for most this amazing day. Yes, I thought – Gotcha!

Me, after the show with my old friend Bob Martin, the theatre photographer and Dad

After the show one night, I was drinking a glass of wine with friends when I was tapped on my shoulder. A man with a spastic left hand greeted me: “Yes,” he smiled acknowledging my look of recognition and moving his hand. “The same as you except I’m lucky, I’m right handed!” We introduced ourselves and then he said: “I so enjoyed your show. You showed me the joy of living. I had forgotten. Thankyou!”

       I smiled.

      God smiled with me.

When he had been shopping in New York he had been mugged. Yeah, it’s not only in South Africa that muggings occur! He had been hit on the part of his brain that is connected to his hearing and as a result was left with no hearing whatsoever. Not even the two percent that I was left with. He was left with zero, nada, niks, nothing! And he lived like that for nine years. He flew to Cape Town to visit his family and while there a Cochlear Implant was performed on him. “Wonder of wonder, miracle of miracles…..” Guy’s hearing was restored!

Mum got to hear of Guy and Mum being Mum managed to get hold of his mother’s phone number in Cape Town. During their conversation she learnt that Guy would be stopping off in George on his way up to Johannesburg. “Please ask him to pop in and see us. We would love to meet him.”

Twelve months after my accident, deafness was still a new thing to me. Not a very nice “new” thing. It was something that I hated and was unfamiliar with. Why was Mum inviting someone who was deaf round to visit us? For goodness sakes! Not only that, but a young deaf MAN? In my eyes I now looked horrendous; my facial nerves having been affected by the accident. Not the sort of face that I wished to show off to any man.

Guy got out of his car and came towards us smiling. A good looking deaf man. Damn, damn, damn! Mum had made us a gorgeous lunch which we ate sitting outside under the Belhambra tree! Guy was hearing again which was something he had been without for nine years. Also he had a joie de vivre which was hard to deny! He was full of laughter, life and…ticking! My Mum and Dad liked him instantly. I was more difficult to win over! Just before he climbed into his car, he turned to me.

“I would really like to take you out for dinner tomorrow night. How about it?”

       “Oh…I…um…dinner…um…I…”

Guy interrupted this incredibly interesting line of conversation .”Yes, Gaynor, dinner tomorrow evening. Should I fetch you at seven?”

“Yes, thankyou,” I managed to get out successfully this time.

He arrived smack on seven and we set off to the restaurant. How we got there unscathed I will never know. Let me explain. Picture if you will two deaf people travelling in a car in the oncoming night. They are both politely trying to converse and obviously that involves trying to make out what the other person is saying. In other words – lip reading plays a vital part. In order to lip read that means staring at the person’s face. Impossible to do when you’re driving! Fortunately there was not much traffic that night! When we very nearly went into a ditch I said: “While you’re driving, you do the talking and I can watch your side view and lip-read.” We arrived safely!

Both my sisters were working at the restaurant that evening. Liz was waitressing and Megan was serving behind the bar. Liz greeted us at the door and led us to our table. “What can I get you to drink?” she asked when we were seated. “Gaye, would you like some red wine?” She knew my taste well.

“Oh, it’s just the night for red wine,” Guy remarked. It was cold and windy outside. “I think we should get a bottle of wine.” And he chose a beautifully expensive Pinot Noir. Maybe an evening with this man would be…quite nice! We then proceeded to have a wonderfully relaxed evening. We chatted together like old friends.

Oh, I forgot mention a very important point. In the restaurant, they had loud, piped music playing. Whenever there was music playing I tended to speak LOUDLY so that I could hear myself above the music. And Guy did exactly the same! So Guy and I happily shouted to one another completely oblivious of the fact that the whole restaurant was privy to our conversation!

Liz shot across to Megan and said: “Megs, do you think that I should go up to Gaynor and Guy and ask them to lower their voices. I mean, the whole restaurant can hear everything they’re saying!”

Megs had a broad grin on her face. “Nah, leave them. They are thoroughly enjoying themselves,” she said, “Also the whole restaurant is really enjoying them!”

Guy and I had a great evening. The bottle of wine was polished off amidst our discovering of each other. Guy lived on a boat in the Caribbean. How romantic was that? We were sitting drinking Irish Coffees and were both happily at ease with each other. I leant close to Guy and asked: “May I ask you a…well, a very personal question?”

When Liz heard me ask this, she began running in an attempt to get to me before Guy and the entire restaurant was treated to one of my “personal questions.”

       “Sure, fire away!” said Guy.

Liz did not make it in time. I dropped my voice to a mini “roar” and whispered: “Tell me, Guy, when you make love do you keep your Cochlear Implant on or do you take it off?”

Guy bellowed back conspiratorially , “I have only just got this so I haven’t had much practise. But in the past I have made sure to keep my eyes open – for lip reading.”

“Oh, of course. Good idea!,” I murmured to the whole restaurant.

Unbeknown to Guy and myself, everybody was totally apoplectic with mirth. My two sisters died a silent death of embarrassment. And I was banned from ever going there when they were on duty!

I came away that evening having made a friend.

The deaf Gaynor had discovered the deaf Guy.

       Smile….I liked him.

I remember my thirtieth birthday party. And that was twenty-two years ago. Twenty-flipping-two years ago! But I remember it clearly. So clearly.

Shirley Johnston is one of my closest friends. When I was playing in Camelot we used to share a lift to the State Theatre because she was appearing in another show at the same theatre complex. We both have the same sense of humour and I like her enormously.

In 1991, two years after my accident, Shirley approached me.”You turn thirty in three weeks. Dave and I were chatting in bed and we decided that we would very much like to host your thirtieth birthday party for you. That is, if you’d like one of course.”

What a question!

Shirley and Dave didn’t set a limit to the amount of people I could invite but I don’t think that they were anticipating 150 people. Word spread and everyone I knew wanted to come.

I had decided to make a lemon meringue pie as my contribution to the party. I used to be an ace lemon meringue pie maker and I was sure that I hadn’t lost my touch. I put all the Marie biscuits into an old Pick ‘n Pay packet ready for crushing later. It was a treat using all of Shirley’s gadgets. An electric fruit squeezer drew the juice from the lemons. An electric mixer mixed the condensed milk with the lemon juice. I was really enjoying myself. I decided to make the pie’s base. Crushed biscuits mixed with melted butter. I took hold of the Pick ‘n Pay packet with all the biscuits and looked around the kitchen. I needed a flat, hard surface. The granite kitchen counter top would do perfectly. I gripped the Pick ‘n Pay packet firmly in my hands. Like an axe-man chopping wood I bought it down hard on the counter. CRASH. Shirley turned from what she was doing startled. CRASH.

“What are you doing?” CRASH.

“I’m crushing the Marie biscuits.” CRASH.

“But Gaynor…” CRASH.

“It works brilliantly.” CRASH.

“Are you sure…” CRASH.

I didn’t hear the rest of her sentence. CRASH.

“That should do it.” CRASH. “Once more for luck.” CRASH. “Just to make sure!” CRASH.

I opened the packet. Two dozen smashed eggs met my eyes. A strangled cry behind me made me turn around. There was Shirley doubled over with the Pick ‘n Pay packet of crushed Marie biscuits in her hand. We looked at the sodden mess of crushed eggs and laughed till tears poured down our cheeks. We laughed. And laughed. And laughed.

We had to buy another two dozen eggs.

The day I turned thirty was special. Everyone who was there meant something to me. After lunch I said to Shirley: “I would like to say a few words to everyone, okay?” I stood on a table on the patio so that everyone could see me. I was nervous.

“Because of my accident, my speaking still isn’t quite right,” I began “so if I say anything and you don’t understand, won’t you shout out and tell me? I can’t guarantee that I will hear you but give it a try anyway.” There was a spontaneous round of encouraging laughter at this…and I was away.

I don’t really remember what I said. I do remember the heady experience of being in front of an audience again, their faces, laughing, listening, hanging on my every word. I finished off with a poem by ee cummings. I had learnt it before my accident and amazingly I remembered every word. If I didn’t know that he had died many years prior to my accident, I would have sworn that he had written this poem exclusively for me.

i thank You God for most this amazing

day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees

and a blue dream of sky;and for everything

which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,

and this is the sun’s birthday;this is the birth

day of life and love and wings;and of the gay

great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing

breathing any – lifted from the no

of all nothing – human merely being

doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and

now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

My thirtieth birthday is so clearly imprinted on my mind. I am taken aback by the big heartedness of Shirley and Dave who gave to me such an incredible day, such a treasured memory. I love them both for always giving so much. (Shirley Johnston was the editor of my book, My Plunge to Fame, and she is the scriptwriter for this new film that has just come out: Felix. It has had brilliant reviews and I can’t wait to see it!

So clearly.

And while you smile

Another smile smiles

And after a while

There are miles of smiles

And life’s worthwhile

Because you smiled.”

My Gran wrote that for me when I was nine years old. When I think of her, I smile. She was that kind of person.

Thinking back on my English travels, I recall the day that B and I set off for Covent Garden to meet friends of mine for lunch. I looked at the woman siting opposite me on the tube. In front of her was a suitcase on wheels. Her young daughter was asleep next to her. I gave her a smile which was met by a blank stare. She had obviously been travelling for a long time and was in no mood for smiles! Two seats down was a rather dour man who was reading a paper and occasionally just staring into space. Our eyes met and I gave him a friendly smile. His eyes shifted uneasily back to his paper. Obviously the tube was not a place for smiles!

We arrived and meandered around Covent Garden. They had lovely little stalls but it was a case of merely looking. Everything was terrifically expensive. Numerous people caught my eye but not once was I met by an answering smile. Oh well, tante pis! London was obviously not a place for smiles!

We arrived at the restaurant where we had arranged to meet everyone. We had no sooner sat down when Suannne arrived. Suanne Braun is a vibrant personality and carries laughter with her. I had seen Suanne this time last year and it seemed as if we had merely paused for breath in our conversation. And there was Jenny De Lenta. I hadn’t see Jenny for twenty-one years and oh, it felt good hugging her once more. I had forgotten the serenity Jenny carries with her. She introduced us to her husband, Craig and her beautiful littler daughter, Milaya. Craig and Milaya went off to do their own thing and left us girls to talk, catch up on each others lives, laugh together and rejoice in being alive. At 2.30 p.m. ‘B’ leant across to me and said: “I have managed to contact your old friend, Lawrence Hilton. He’s in Leicester Square and will be here in ten minutes.”

Hell, ’twas good seeing him again. He makes me laugh like few other people do. I don’t know what it is! We obviously share the same sense of humour in bucket loads. That afternoon loads of smiles were shared amongst us fellow South Africans!

Walking home I smiled at a woman walking towards me expecting the normal blank stare in return. I was met by an answering beam as the woman passed my side. Not just in the mouth. Her eyes seemed to sparkle as if the two of us had just shared a joke. I stopped in my tracks, looking back at her. Then unable to stop myself I went after her, calling out: “Excuse me, could you just wait a second?”

“Sure,” she said, “What’s the matter?”

“You. You are what matters.” She looked a little puzzled. Understandably! I tried to explain. “I am on holiday here from South Africa, and I have noticed that you Londoners don’t smile at strangers. You don’t smile at people you pass on the street or sitting opposite you on the tube. Londoners didn’t smile, I thought, that is until I passed you and you met my smile with a radiant beam that took my breath away. Thankyou!”

The woman grinned at me. “I have been living in London for the past seven years. But before that I spent thirty of them growing up in South Africa. I am South African!”

I chuckled the whole way home.

“And life’s worthwhile

Because you smiled.”
